You recently released your first single ‘Sound Steppa’, how was the process of putting together

It’s been a long process to be honest, most of it involved me overcoming mental blocks from both the production and then also the releasing element. Writing, recording and releasing my own music is no joke haha!

When I first made this tune back in March on a stormy night, I knew I loved the vibe and that I wanted it to be my first single but I did want to build up a little reputation in the scene around me and then I MCed my first show down in Brixton with Kinematic in June and that has been such an amazing way of not only working on my craft, hearing new music but also meeting people in the bass scene around me. And then on the production side of everything - I think because I make everything from scratch my state of mind really affects what I hear and totally changes my opinion on it. So if I’m having a bad day I’ll think everything sounds shit and then change it all and then listen again and hear everything totally differently!

Working on my routine and lifestyle really helps my wellbeing and trusting the process. Also I’ve been collaborating more with other people and I find this sooooooo incredibly inspiring. And just like reminding myself I’m doing this because it’s fun and I love it not to torment myself with perfectionism. Also something I learned recently is that the things I am most self conscious about in my productions are often the things that actually  make me unique and to learn into that instead of trying to sound like other producers

"When raving I always felt like there was something missing and now I realised all I needed was the mic in my hand ..."

Can we look forward to more Zira Flo releases in 2026?

YES YES YES got sooooooooooooooooooo much amazing stuff coming, got more of my tunes and a bunch of incredible collabs that I’m sooooooooooo excited about.

As a vocalist and an MC, how did you first get behind the mic?

I grew up in Devon and started in the blues, jazz, soul world. When I was 15 I used to go to these blues open mics and have jams with all these old people, playing guitar and singing. Then I moved to Brighton. I was always jamming with my mates, playing instruments and improving on the mic, and have been going to raves since I was young as well. So when I got booked in June it felt so natural like why haven’t I been doing this the whole time? When raving I always felt like there was something missing and now I realised all I needed was the mic in my hand lol!

You call yourself the DnB fairy, what drew you to the genre?

I was actually thinking the other day to change it to Bass fairy haha! Because yeah I love dnb but also jungle, garage, dubstep, 140 anything bassy. Always been lucky to have a mate who built a rig and put on parties down in Devon growing up so just always been drawn to those chest melters.

As well as DnB, you move between a lot of different sounds, who were some of your early influences in music?

As well as bass music I always loved hip-hop, Pharcyde, Tribe, People under the stairs, all that old school jazzy stuff, and then yeah soul, jazz, Erykah Badu, Billie Holiday.

What’s been your favourite set to host/MC so far?

AHH this is a hard one, I love Teez, Diversion, Croakheads, Savannah had me with her at Hospitality on the Beach, and was absolute gold at Boomtown with Sexy Lady Massive, alongside Jolie P and Enamie. But I gotta give this one to Kinematic, I’m obsessed with their events down in Brixton and since they had me on that first set it brought about all those other opportunities <33 Also it’s just absolute gold. I love being in the crowd with the mic, it's so much fun.

We love seeing you put your own spin on your favourite tracks … If you could have a

verse/feature on any song ever made, what would it be?

OOOOOOO I have no idea ahahah! But if I were to collaborate on any future projects - I’d love to work with Break, Aries, Napes, Samurai Breaks

Who are some women/gender-minority artists, producers, DJs or MC’s you would recommend?

SOO MANY  - DJs - Larnie Moles, Savannah, Dee Montego, Bluck, Gaia, Jay-mo, Sali, Skesa, MC’s - Jolie P, Enamie, Vispera, Kmzi, Chickaboo, Mynx, Ayahmarar, deadman, Producers +/ Artists - Charis, Airbender, Tianna Franxx, Rose Holland, Pinks, Anais, Blondeting, Gifta, Driia, Kaya Fyah, Klumzy Khemist, Oko, Charlotte X, AND SOOO MANY MORE!

â€‹â€‹What do you have coming up for the rest of the year?

Well I don’t want to give too much away hehe, but I’ll be starting the new year MCing and eating mango sticky rice out in the sun. And I have loads of collaborations coming out with the  most incredible producers and artists to name a couple - Charis, Rose Holland, Pinks <33 As well as a bunch of my own music. Hopefully back at the festivals this year! And yeah just keep flowing and doing what I love.
